Soumano Maoi 2024

The “Soumano Maoi” is a festival held over three days in the Souma region of Fukushima Prefecture and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the Japanese government. Approximately 400 mounted warriors donning armor, carrying swords, and waving ancestral flags participate, creating a magnificent and splendid historical tableau that is truly unparalleled.

History:

Over a millennium ago, the tradition is said to have originated when Taira no Masakado, an ancestor of the Souma clan, used wild horses as a metaphor for enemy soldiers during military exercises. Even after the Souma clan settled in the region, successive leaders continued to pass down the event. Evolving through various changes, the festival remains a vibrant ceremony praying for regional peace and tranquility.

Highlights:

The highlight of the Souma Nomaoi is on the second day. It includes a grand procession called the “Ogyoretsu,” where over 400 mounted warriors, with a portable shrine, march through the city. Amidst the rising dust, there is a thrilling “Kacchu Keiba” (armored horse racing) where people and horses race together. Another spectacle is the “Shinji Sohodatsu Sen” where hundreds of mounted warriors compete to capture a descending sacred flag, creating a vibrant scene reminiscent of the Sengoku period.

Attendance:

The Souma Nomaoi takes place in various locations in Souma and Futaba districts, with the main venue being the “Hibarigahara Saijo Chi” in Minamisoma City, Fukushima. To witness the “Kacchu Keiba” and “Shinji Sohodatsu Sen” on the second day (Sunday) at the Hibarigahara Saijo Chi, a spectator ticket is required.
