Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival 2024
隅田川花火大会(Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival) is an annual fireworks festival held along the Sumida River in Tokyo, specifically along the riverbanks in Taito Ward (Asakusa on the right bank) and Sumida Ward (Mukojima on the left bank). The festival takes place every year on the last Saturday of July. Along with the Edogawa Fireworks Festival, held in August, it is considered one of the two major fireworks festivals in Tokyo.
Origin:
The origin of the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival dates back to the Edo period. During the period when enjoying boat trips on the Sumida River and launching fireworks were permitted for a limited time as part of the summer tradition, a fireworks artisan named Kagiya Tamaya decided to promote his fireworks by launching them on the first day of the fireworks season. This event eventually evolved into the grand fireworks festival that is celebrated today.
