Nagaragawa Ukai 2026
Nagaragawa Ukai is a traditional form of cormorant fishing held every year on the Nagara River in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, from May 11 to October 15. It takes place every night except on nights of the Mid-Autumn full moon and when the river is swollen. It is said that the event is not held on the Mid-Autumn full moon because, in ukai—where ayu sweetfish are caught by startling them with bonfires—bright moonlight reduces the effect of the firelight. Since ukai is still held during other full moons, this day off can be regarded as a traditional holiday.
