Takasaki Masturi 2024
The largest festival in Gunma Prefecture, the Takasaki Festival, attracts approximately 700,000 visitors. The event features highlights such as a fireworks display and traditional floats. Especially noteworthy is the fireworks display held on the first night (postponed to the next day in case of inclement weather). The event was canceled in 2020 and 2021. The fireworks show, second in scale in North Kanto after the nationwide fireworks competition in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki, is diverse and launched near Wada Bridge over the Karasu River that flows through the city center. The fireworks display boasts an impressive 15,000 fireworks.
The precursor to the Takasaki Festival was the festival of Yorimasa Shrine, dedicated by the Daimyo of Takasaki during the Edo period. The festival experienced a temporary decline when the Daimyo’s residence moved to Tokyo. In 1868, it became the Dosojin Festival and underwent several name changes, including Takasaki Hono-sai in 1955, Takasaki Furusato Matsuri in 1975, and finally, Takasaki Matsuri in 1985. In 2000, the festival was extended to four days to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Takasaki City. In addition to traditional elements like floats and portable shrines, the festival includes various citizen-led events such as the national fireworks competition (now the fireworks display) since 1954, a skills festival since 1984, as well as taiko drumming, Rai Mai (Thunder Dance), creative Daruma mikoshi, raffles, Takasaki Awa Odori dance, and stage performances.
