Tochigi Aki Matsuri 2024
The festival takes place on Kurano-machi Avenue, the main street of Tochigi City. Its origins trace back to the “Shizuka Gozen no Yama” float, which was part of the Sanja Festival procession (Sanja Matsuri) and the “Ikutsuguri no Yama” float from Utsunomiya. In 1874, a merchant from Tochigi purchased the float from the Sanja Festival and showcased it during the Kanmu Festival at the Tochigi Prefectural Office. Subsequently, each neighborhood began creating their own doll floats, which were paraded through the city on various joyous occasions.
The festival gained momentum, and since 1937, a float festival has been held approximately every five years. The main event became the “Tochigi Autumn Festival,” held biennially in the fall over two days on a Saturday and Sunday in November.
On the festival day, special trains are operated to accommodate visitors, including those traveling from Tokyo. The event attracts numerous tourists from different regions.
