Tokyo Samba Carnival 2024
The Asakusa Samba Carnival Contest is a Samba Parade contest held in Asakusa, Taito Ward, Tokyo. The first edition took place in 1981, making it the largest Samba event in Japan.
Overview
Organized by the Asakusa Samba Carnival Executive Committee, the contest is held annually on the last Saturday of August. Although it is a one-day event, it draws approximately 500,000 attendees, making it the largest Samba Carnival outside of Brazil and the largest in the Northern Hemisphere.
As of 2019 Asakusa Samba Carnival Teams participating in the carnival are grouped based on their size, following a league system. The league system has undergone several changes in recent years, but as of 2007, teams were categorized into four leagues: the Communication League, which includes regional brass bands for communication; the Theme Samba League, consisting of corporate teams; and the S2 League and S1 League. In the S1 and S2 Leagues, teams compete in a contest to showcase their parade performances.
