Tottori Shanshan Matsuri 2024
The Tottori Shanshan Festival (Tottori Shanshan Matsuri) is a summer festival held annually in mid-August in Tottori City, Japan. It began in 1961 as a combination of the local shrine’s annual festival procession and the traditional “Inaba no Kasa Odori” (Inaba Umbrella Dance) that has been passed down in Tottori City since 1965. The festival’s focal point is the “Ichi-Ei Odori” (Simultaneous Dance), where thousands of participants dance through the city center with umbrellas.
During the dance, the bells attached to the umbrellas jingle, producing the distinctive sound “shanshan.” The festival gets its name from this sound, as well as from the fact that the hot springs at Tottori Onsen near Tottori Station also bubble up with a “shanshan” sound.
The festival attracts over 200,000 spectators, making it the largest festival in Tottori City. The participants in the “Ichi-Ei Odori” number around 4,000, organized into 100 groups. In 2014, the festival was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the “world’s largest umbrella dance.”
