Tsurugaoka hachimangu rei taisai 2024
The grand festival of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is the most important annual festival at the shrine and has traditionally been held on August 15th. In the old lunar calendar, which was previously used, this day coincided with the full moon. Since the deity of the shrine has historical connections with the sea and fishing, on this day, Minamoto no Yoritomo, in the past, participated in the “Horyoe” event at Yuigahama, releasing a thousand cranes and performing horseback archery rituals.
According to the “Azuma Kagami,” the Horyoe event and horseback archery began on August 15th of the third year of Bunji (1187). This is considered the origin of the grand festival at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
Nowadays, the festival is celebrated extravagantly for three days from September 14th to the following day, September 16th, adjusted to the current solar calendar.
