Yamaage Sai 2024
The “Yamaage Matsuri” (Mountain Raising Festival) is an annual event held in Nasu Karasuyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, spanning three days, including the fourth Saturday of July. It is a dedication event of the grand festival of the Yakumo Shrine, known for setting up a temporary stage in the city center and performing Kabuki.
With a history of approximately 460 years, the Yamaage Matsuri was registered as one of the “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, Float Festivals” under the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. It is the largest festival in Nasu Karasuyama City and consists of the nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property “Karasuyama’s Yamaage Event” and the mikoshi (portable shrine) of the Yakumo Shrine.
