Yamamoto Himawari Festival 2024
In the town of Yamamoto, which suffered significant damage from the tsunami during the Great East Japan Earthquake, approximately three million sunflowers are now in full bloom.
The coastal areas of Yamamoto, which were affected by the tsunami, have been repurposed as farmland, with sunflowers planted to serve as fertilizer for the fields, aiding in the growth of crops. This year, in late May, around three million sunflowers of the “Kuruna” variety were sown on an 8.2-hectare site in the Kasano district. These sunflowers began blooming simultaneously this week, creating a spectacular display.
To share the beauty of the flowers with visitors, the town of Yamamoto organizes a “Sunflower Festival” where people can enjoy walks through the fields and even pick the flowers. This festival has attracted a large number of tourists and families, with many visitors exploring the sunflower fields, taking photographs, and enjoying the scenery.
A woman in her thirties, visiting from Fukushima Prefecture, expressed her delight, saying, “The sunflowers are blooming in a sea of yellow, and it’s incredibly beautiful. We took many photos as a family and will cherish the memories.”
According to Yamamoto Town officials, the sunflowers at the venue can be enjoyed until August 8th. Afterward, the flowers will be plowed into the soil, serving as nutrients for the fields.
