Yatsushiro Myoken Festival 2025
The Yatsushiro Myoken Festival, held at Yatsushiro Shrine, is one of Kyushu’s three major festivals and has continued since the Edo period.
It is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020, gaining worldwide attention.
The festival highlight is the “Shinko Procession,” featuring large turtle-snakes and lions considered as the mounts of Myoken deity, along with various elaborately decorated Kasaboko floats marching in procession.
The “Goya” is the festival’s eve event held at Honmachi Arcade and other locations, featuring displays of Kasaboko and turtle-snakes and activities like stamp rallies to heighten the festive atmosphere.
