Zenkoku Hanabi Kyougi Taikai 2024

The “Zen-Nihon Hanabi Kyogi Taikai” (全国花火競技大会), or the All-Japan Fireworks Competition, is an annual fireworks festival held at the Omono River riverside sports park in Daisen City, Akita Prefecture. It takes place on the last Saturday of August each year and is commonly known as “Omagari no Hanabi,” named after the city of Daisen, which was formerly known as Omagari City. It is considered one of Japan’s three major fireworks festivals and one of the “Japan’s Three Major Competitive Fireworks Festivals.”

In this competition, 28 selected fireworks companies compete in all three categories, vying for the overall championship (Prime Minister’s Award) based on comprehensive evaluations in two nighttime fireworks categories. The event assesses the overall skills of the fireworks artisans, making it a competition that tests the general abilities of pyrotechnicians. In contrast, the purpose of the competition in Tsuchiura is to determine the best star mine (specialist), and around 70 companies participate.

The timing of the festival, occurring around the end of the summer vacation for schools (except for some universities) in Akita Prefecture and the surrounding areas, symbolizes the conclusion of the short summer in the northern regions. Additionally, the event is known for taking place when the nighttime temperatures have started to cool down, providing a refreshing and cool climate, except in unusually hot years.
