Hokuryu cho sunflower fes 2024

In the summer of 1979 (Showa 54), inspired by the sunflower fields dedicated to sunflower oil that a Hokuryu Agricultural Cooperative employee encountered during a cooperative training visit to the former Yugoslavia, sunflower cultivation began in Hokuryu. The Agricultural Cooperative Women’s Division initiated a movement to cultivate one sunflower per household. The town revitalization volunteer group, “Hokuryu Town Ryutopia Association,” was established, and in 1987 (Showa 62), the first Sunflower Festival took place.

Subsequently, the sunflower village faced significant damage from typhoons and tornadoes. Despite these challenges, the residents of Hokuryu bravely confronted the difficulties, uniting with one heart and cooperating in reconstruction efforts. The cultivation of sunflowers by Hokuryu junior high school students marked the beginning of “Global Sunflower Cultivation.” Over 20 years, various initiatives, including the voluntary sunflower field mowing support campaign “Sunflower Village Mowing Crusade,” have been carried out, and these activities continue to be passed down to this day.

Bathed in the midsummer sun, the splendidly blooming sunflowers embody the “vitality of life,” representing the passionate spirit of the people of Hokuryu.
