Yamaage Festival 2026

The Yamaage Festival is a dedicatory event of the annual grand festival of Yakumo Shrine in Nasukarasuyama City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is particularly known for its performances of kabuki on temporary stages constructed in the town center. For each performance, a handmade stage set is assembled, featuring a mountain structure 7 meters wide, over 10 meters tall, and 100 meters deep. The structure is assembled, dismantled, and moved about six times per day over three days as it parades through the town, with the total moving distance reaching up to 20 km.
The festival was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in February 1979 as the “Karasuyama Yamaage Event.” Currently, the performances are held over three days—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—in the fourth week of July.
