Goshogawara Tachineputa 2026

The Goshogawara Tachineputa is a type of neputa lantern originating from the folk tradition of Nemuri-nagashi (“sleep-removal ritual”).
It is a festival held in Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture.
From the Meiji era to the early Taisho period, the festival was known for its enormous neputa floats, but the floats became smaller over time due to the installation of electric wires and two major fires.
In 1996, the giant neputa floats were revived and named “Tachineputa,” and in 1999, the festival itself was officially renamed “Goshogawara Tachineputa.”
It is sometimes misspelled as “立倭武多,” even in travel company websites or pamphlets, but the characters 佞 (nei) and 倭 (wa/i) are entirely different.
