Korakuen Autumn leaves best time to see 2024
A strolling garden with ties to the Tokugawa family in Mito
Designated as a Special Historic Site and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, this garden is an oasis in the heart of the city. Originally built within the Edo residence of the Tokugawa family (later becoming the upper residence after the Great Fire of Meireki), the garden features structures resembling scenic spots from Japan and various regions of China within a landscape representing “the sea, mountains, rivers, and fields.” In autumn, the garden is adorned with vibrant colors from Japanese maples, hornbeams, zelkovas, ginkgos, and more, creating a charming atmosphere, especially around structures like the “Tsutenkyo” (inspired by the Tsutenkyo Bridge at Kyoto’s Tofuku-ji Temple).
Highlights:
The garden boasts one of the largest collections of around 500 Japanese maples, providing a picturesque autumn landscape that changes with every step. While the entire garden offers beautiful autumn scenery, recommended areas include the vicinity of “O-Setagawa,” “Momijibayashi” (Maple Forest), and “Maruya.”
