Shinjuku Gyoen Autumn leaves best time to see 2024

A city oasis adorned with autumn colors:

Established in 1906 (Meiji 39) as an imperial garden and later opened to the public, Shinjuku Gyoen spans approximately 583,000 square meters, with a 3.5 km circumference. The garden skillfully combines formal gardens with beautiful rows of Platanus trees, picturesque landscape gardens, and traditional Japanese gardens. While the trees in the garden display various expressions throughout the seasons, autumn is a special time when the foliage begins to change color in mid-October, reaching its peak from mid-November to mid-December. During this period, ginkgo trees, maples, cherry blossoms, and other trees vividly paint the garden. Additionally, the Shinjuku Gyoen Chrysanthemum Exhibition is held during the autumn foliage season (details available on the official website).

 

Highlights:

The maples near the Shinjuku Gate form an arch of autumn foliage, welcoming visitors. Other noteworthy spots include the Japanese maple trees in the traditional Japanese garden, the ginkgo trees near the former Western-style Rest House, the Central Rest House, and near the Shinjuku Gate. The maples on the Momiji-yama (Maple Mountain), which change color last in the garden, are also spectacular.
