The Yokohama Parade 2024
The Yokohama Parade (International Costume Parade) Origin:
In 1952, significant portions of central Yokohama, previously under occupation, were released, leaving many areas in a state of ruins. This fall, as efforts were made to quickly revitalize Yokohama, various sectors of the city pondered on what could be done. In the spring of the following year (1953), a proposal was made during a meeting of the Honjo Commercial Department to create a major event that would attract numerous people and become a famous tradition in Yokohama.
Motivated by the idea of devising an event that could contribute to the city’s reconstruction, the Yokohama Opening Ceremony Committee was formed. The goal was to plan an event that would showcase the unique international character of the port, allowing participation from the resident foreign population. It was decided that an International Costume Parade, highlighting the distinctive features of the international port, would be the most suitable and unique event to achieve this. The first parade took place on June 2, 1953, coinciding with the Yokohama Port Opening Day.
