The "Sakura" part of the name refers to the numerous cherry trees that may now be seen on Sakurajima. Another theory holds that the divinity Konohanasakuya-hime is the inspiration for Sakurajima's name.

JR Kagoshima Station are a ten or five minutes walk from the ferry port, which is also accessible through City View Buses. Cars may be transported on the Sakurajima ferry for 1400 or 1950 yen each way, depending on how many meters long they are. To reach the southeasterly tip of the Sakurajima peninsula via land, one must take a 90-minute detour if one wants to skip the ferry.

Yunohira Observatory

You can observe a rocky lava landscape and occasionally ascending volcanic smoke plumes from the observatory.  This location offers a beautiful view of Kinko Bay's quiet seas and Kagoshima City!
The contrast between Mt. Sakurajima's complete darkness and the lights of Kagoshima City is stunning at night. The dome above the observation platform is designed to resemble a cherry blossom petal, in keeping with the name Sakurajima (cherry blossom island)!

Sakurajima Lava Nagisa Park

Sakurajima Port is about eight minutes' walk from Sakurajima Yogan Nagisa Park.  One of the longest footbaths in Japan, measuring 100 m, is located in the park and is driven by a natural hot spring that originates 1,000 m below the earth.
Why not relax your weary feet in the footbath while enjoying Sakurajima Kinko Bay in front of you?
